Spring Planting

April 7, 2026

Spring is a busy and weather-dependent time for us here at Nickajack Farms. As the ground thaws and temperatures rise, farmers prepare their fields by tilling the soil, spreading nutrients, and making sure everything is ready for seeds to take root. Timing is everything, with careful attention paid to weather patterns and soil conditions to ensure each crop has the best chance to grow. What may look simple from the outside is actually a detailed and thoughtful process. Farmers must balance efficiency with care, making adjustments along the way depending on rain, temperature, and soil health.

Our farmers are eager to start planting our corn and soybeans, but we typically wait until mid April because of the risk of frost—so our schedule really depends on how the weather cooperates. In the meantime, we’ve already begun applying fertilizer whenever conditions allow, and getting our fields ready for a strong growing season. We’re also fertilizing our hay early so it has plenty of time to grow. While all of this is underway, we’re already looking ahead, knowing our pumpkins will be planted in June.

Spring is a season full of hope and hard work—each seed planted is a small investment in the months ahead, with the promise of growth, harvest, and a busy, rewarding summer and fall on the farm.
